How I talk anymore.

I've had this MacBook for 3.5 years, but I just learned today that I can record audio and video on it.

Edit: And now I think I have also learned to upload video to YouTube properly. Maybe.

The occasion for this discovery is the Blog Voices meme making the rounds. Listen to Tanit-Isis speak Canadian here, Louise speak Irish here, Steph speak Trans-Oceanic English here, and Beangirl speak Texican here. I add my flat US Midwestern (the original Midwest--the one east of the Mississippi River) patois below, despite the best efforts of my cat William to stop me. Now it's your turn: record yourself saying the following list of words:

Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught;

and answer the following questions:

What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
What do you call gym shoes?
What do you say to address a group of people?
What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
What do you call your grandparents?
What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

For the record, I believe the expression is "spit and image" and, although I purport to give "probably" 3 syllables, I notice that when I use it later in a sentence it has only 2. So I lied. Anymore, who has time to enunciate?

Coming soon: my new spit and image.

  1. Oooo, girl. I can't play your video! ARGH. Travesty! (I think you have to change your privacy settings for the video on YouTube?)

Totally curious to hear your so-called "Midwestern" accents, as everybody KNOWS that the REAL Midwest starts WEST of the Mississippi. Well. Known. Fact.

  2. AWEsome!!!

You know what? I think I picked up the term "rolypoly" in Michigan. Apparently it's not what my cohorts from the (real) Midwest call that particular kind of bug.

Facial expression concern made me LAUGH (mostly because I had the same thought but couldn't be bothered to figure out how to splice the two videos together with the new software on my computer).

  3. You sound like me - I'm from St.Louis, but my accent has been contaminated by living in Nashville and Louisiana (LOOsianna). I don't know how to record myself, so you will want to take my word for it.
